The Second Asian Technology Conference in Mathematics

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY IN MATHEMATICAL RESEARCH AND TEACHING

Scope

ATCM97 will provide an interdisciplinary forum where researchers in the fields of mathematics, education, computer and technology together with teachers can present results and exchange ideas and information. The Conference will cover a broad range of topics on the relevancy of the use of technology in mathematics teaching and research. These include, but not limit to,
  1. distance learning
  2. multimedia
  3. numerical integration and differentiation
  4. computer algebra
  5. theorem proving
  6. applications of Computer Algebra Systems (CAS)
  7. graphing calculators

Venue

The Conference will be held at Universiti Sains Malaysia which is located approximately 5 kilometer from the airport and 10 kilometer from town. The beaches are a further 10 kilometer away.

Program

The conference consist of plenary sessions, special sessions and contributed papers. All will be presented as talks. Contributed papers will be presented in parallel sessions. In addition there will also be hands-on workshops on the use of software and hardware relevant to mathematics research and teaching. An exhibition of books, software and hardware may also be on display.

Call for Papers

Abstracts

The deadline for submission is 20 January 1997. Your abstract must show title, author(s) and affiliation(s) and must not exceed one A4 or letter size page. Abstracts can be submitted

  1. by electronic mail in either generic LaTeX (no special style files other than those provided in LaTeX) format, in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), and ASCII text form. Abstracts in either form will be made viewable from our Web sites, or,

  2. as a hard copy by postal mail.
Each abstract must be sent to both chairs of the organising committees, Yahya Abu Hasan and Wei-Chi Yang (see the end of this page to get either the postal addresses or the electronic addresses). A booklet of abstracts will be distributed at the conference.

Notification of acceptance for presentation at the conference will be sent out on 20 February 1997.

Full Papers

The deadline for submission is 20 January 1997. Guidelines for submission of full papers will be posted as soon as they are available. Selected full papers presented at the conference will be compiled in the Electronic Proceedings;

Registration

The registration fee of US$130 (approx. Malaysian Ringgit RM325) will cover the cost of registration materials, Conference Programs, Abstracts booklet, Conference Dinner and morning and afternoon teas.

For registration, please send the completed Registration Form to the Organisers. Please also enclose your registration fee in the form of a Bank Cheque

  1. in RM (Malaysian Ringgit) made out to: BENDAHARI-UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA, or,
  2. in US Dollars made out to: Bendahari USM or Bursar USM.

A late registration fee of US$40 (RM100) will apply for registration after 15 March 1997.

About Penang

Penang is an island connected to the mainland by the third longest bridge in the world (13.5km). The temperature is about 24 - 32°C. Main spoken languages are Malay, Chinese, English and Indian. On an afternoon off, a tour of interesting places on the island and on the mainland will be arranged. A small fee will apply.
