3. MATHEMATICAL SOFTWARE

We are at the stage when a number of major dynamic software titles on the international scene are still evolving. These all offer mathematics teachers exciting new possibilities using selectable, dependent objects.

The main players in UK schools, supplied by Chartwell Yorke ( Bolton):
Autograph 3 – UK ............................ Coordinate geometry (2D and 3D), probability/statistics
Cabri 2+ and Cabri 3D – France ........ Geometry (2D and 3D)
Derive 6 – USA ................................ CAS and graphing
Geometer’s Sketchpad 4 – USA ....... Geometry (2D)

Also popular, and developed from respected educational research:
SMILE software – UK ..................... Short, focused activities

MS Office
or equivalents are assumed to be available,
especially Word and Excel. A number of individuals are creating excellent web resources for the use of Excel in mathematics teaching, and some are listed on the TSM resources page:

OTHER SOFTWARE

A summary of the bewildering and ever growing choice now facing mathematics teachers is given on the TSM resources page:
Suppliers and Creators of Mathematical Software

CURRICULUM ON LINE (COL)

The British Government currently offers generous assistance with the purchase of multi-media resources in schools using “e-learning Credits”. “Curriculum On Line” was launched in 2002 and has been largely responsible for the healthy uptake of ICT by schools in England and Wales. See:
