Abstract
This three hour workshop will provide a hands-on experience in the use of
the important products Scientific Workplace and Scientific Notebook and
describe some pedagogical applications of these products. No prior
experience with the use of these products is required. Among the topics to
be covered will be the following:
- The workshop will demonstrate the role of Scientific Workplace and
Scientific Notebook as friendly front ends to the computing engine Maple.
Participants will learn how to perform a variety of mathematical operations
and how to sketch two and three dimensionsional graphs. The workshop will
suggest some interesting pedagogical applications of the computing ability
of Scientific Workplace and Scientific Notebook.
- The workshop will discuss the process of preparing documents using
Scientific Workplace and Scientific Notebook. In addition, the workshop
will discuss some ways in which this document making ability can be used in
the classroom in place of the traditional method of teaching at a
blackboard. The workshop will suggest ways in which homework assignments,
lecture notes and other handouts can be made available to students with the
help of Scientific Workplace and Scientific Notebook.
- The workshop will describe the ability of Scientific Notebook to access
documents that have been placed in a site on the World Wide Web or on an FTP
site.
